Across The Broken Line

This Charlie Fox short story was written especially for my newsletter members and it was a long time before it became more widely available. I always wanted to write something with a broken-up timeline, but my early attempts ended in frustration. Originally, I conceived this tale to be the final story in the Fox Five: A Charlie Fox Short Story Collection, but when it I couldn’t get it as I wanted it, I shelved it, temporarily, and wrote something else instead.

As is always the way, though, the basic idea wouldn’t leave me alone. Fortunately, I was able to write the bones of it and then put it aside for several months to ferment gently in the back of my mind. The time jumps, backwards and forwards from three weeks ago to right now, still proved a challenge, but also a great framework.

Here, Charlie is tasked to protect a principal on the run-up to the holiday season in New York City. Not everyone is going to get exactly what they wish for as a Christmas gift. Some, though, might just get what they deserve…
